Tips and tricks
Remember to always bring a water bottle, take small sips throughout your run to stay hydrated but don’t chug to avoid water logging.
Try to relax and keep an even pace, rather than stopping and starting.
Focus on being outdoors, the smells, the sights, the people. Make your run a time to think, de-stress, and clear your mind.
Accept that not every run will turn out the way you think it will, or be a “good run” in your mind. A “bad run” is better than no run at all.
Try a naked run. Run without your iPod, watch, cell phone, or any electronics. Just concentrate on the way your body feels, your own body’s pace, and your breathing.
It’s okay to take a break and walk, you’re moving, you’re exercising, and you’re enjoying your run so that you aren’t practically dead the next day and can’t run again.
Set a spot that you’re going to run to, like a bench or a tree in the distance, and tell yourself that you can walk for a minute once you reach that point. As soon as you reach that point, choose another one without stopping to walk. Repeat until you absolutely have to take a break.
Run with a “cupped” hand, as if you were holding an egg. Do not crush your hands together in fists.
Even if you only have time for a 15 minute run, you’re still getting out there. It is worth it.
Always warm up before your run. Walk for a couple minutes, and do some dynamic stretching.
Always cool down after your run. Walk for a couple minutes and then do some static stretching. Your body will thank you.
Set goals, such as finishing a 1k, then a 5k, and then a 10k. Give yourself a reward when you’ve accomplished them.
Listen to upbeat, happy songs. There is no shame in breaking out a little bit of dance while you’re running. Smiling is okay too :)
